Experiences in Exile
General John French's edict

On 24 September 1900, General French issued a proclamation: "All burghers taken in arms by us will be treated without exception as prisoners of war and will be deported to St Helena or Ceylon. Burghers who give themselves up voluntarily will not be deported out of South Africa but will be sent down to the Cape Colony or Natal without delay".
